Why Habit Tracking Helps You Stay Consistent

July 22, 20262 min read

Hey Lady,

One thing that often surprises women when they join one of my groups is how I talk about tracking. Most women arrive full of motivation and willpower, ready to commit to perfect days, and I gently talk them out of it.

Why Habit Tracking Works?

Over the years I've become a huge fan of habit trackers, or commitment trackers as I tend to call them. You may have seen them in the form of a calendar where you mark an X every day, or perhaps you've taken part in one of those "Walk for 30 Days" or "Squat for 30 Days" charity challenges. They work brilliantly, at least while we're doing them.

The problem is that many of us stop as soon as the challenge ends because we were chasing a perfect record rather than building a habit that fits real life.

Progress Beats Perfection

In the last Break the Cycle group, I asked the women to track their daily actions, but I made one thing very clear from the start.

Four days out of seven is progress.

Five is excellent.

Six tells me momentum is beginning to build.

Seven? I usually say, "It's OK to take a day off."

That often raises a few eyebrows, but I've seen too many women fall into the all-or-nothing trap. They hold on tightly for weeks, convince themselves they must never miss a day, and then stop altogether the first time life happens.

Why Consistency Matters
More Than Perfect Weeks

Research suggests it takes around 66 days, on average, for a behaviour to start feeling automatic. That's why I'm far more interested in consistency than perfection.

Every tick on a tracker is a small promise you've kept to yourself.

It builds confidence, strengthens the connection between intention and action, and reminds you that you're becoming someone who keeps going.

How to Start a Simple Habit Tracker

So if you've never used a tracker before, perhaps this is the week to start. Grab a sheet of paper, draw seven boxes and simply tick the days you follow through. Even simpler, mark X on your calendar

Not with the aim of filling every box, but with the aim of giving yourself visible proof that you're moving in the right direction.

With love and good vibes,

Jacqueline xx

💜 P.S. If you're tired of building healthy habits for a few weeks only to find yourself starting over, my next

Break the Cycle group begins on 31 July. We build routines that hold when life doesn't go to plan, without chasing perfection.

If you've been thinking about joining, this is the last Break the Cycle group before September.
